2 Myths about Hand Sanitizer Dispensers

Hygahand
On a daily basis, you come into contact with several items that have been touched by numerous people. This frequent contact spreads germs which cause sickness, especially during flu season. Hand sanitizer dispensers are one of the quickest ways to remove germs from your hands, but some people are skeptical due to certain misconceptions.  There are many misconceptions about hand hygiene, but the following are 2 myths about hand sanitizer dispensers that stand out.

Myth:  Hand sanitizer dispensers create drug-resistant mutant bacteria .
Fact: If alcohol is the main ingredient, the germs will not stand a chance.  Alcohol physically kills germs and there is no evidence that supports the theory that germs mutate to supersede the effects of hand sanitizer. In fact, alcohol-based hand sanitizers have been shown to kill even multi-drug resistant pathogens. With WellBeing’s touch-free hand sanitizer dispenser, 99.99% of germs will be killed on contact. WellBeing’s sanitizer solution contains 67% Ethyl Alcohol, which is effective against E. Coli, MSRA, and Strep in just 15 seconds.

Myth: All hand sanitizer dispensers are the same.
Fact: Despite popular assumption, not all hand sanitizer dispensers are created equal. Some require actual contact to release sanitizer while others are hands-free. When people want to get their hands clean, the last thing they want is to touch a dirty dispenser. With WellBeing’s touch free hand sanitizer dispenser, there’s nothing to touch- simply wave your hand underneath and a drop of sanitizer will land in your hand. WellBeing’s touch-free dispensers take both gel or foam sanitizer and contains zero thickeners that can attract and promote the growth of bacteria on your skin. Unlike most dispensers, WellBeing’s dispensers are drip resistant and meet CDC, APIC and OSHA standards. While regular dispensers don’t require battery operation like touch-free dispensers do, WellBeing provides batteries for no additional charge.

Debunking the myths about hand sanitizer dispensers is important because it relates directly to our health. Hand sanitizer dispensers are great for offices, schools and medical facilities.  It can even increase productivity in the office environment due to less sickness outbreaks.  Don’t miss out on the opportunity to provide a clean and healthy environment for yourself and the people around you. If you are looking for more ways to incorporate touch free technology, keeping healthy with touch-free soap dispensing is just as easy to use and provide overwhelming sanitation benefits as well.

5 Reasons to Choose Mounted Soap Dispensers

Hygasoap

A mounted soap dispenser is the perfect way to remind people to wash their hands and stay healthy. While most mounted soap dispensers are found in businesses, they are practical for any location. The following are 5 reasons to choose mounted soap dispensers:

In the long run, you will save a lot of product and money with WellBeing’s mounted soap dispensers, because they control the amount of soap dispensed to meet the needs of regular users. • Prevents spread of germs - Studies have proven that liquid and foam soap is better at preventing the spread of germs than bar soap. Keeping healthy with touch-free soap dispensing is becoming more popular as people crave maximum sanitation. People avoid using bar soap, because it is used by multiple people and exposed to the air and bacteria. But if you have a wall mounted soap dispenser, your employees will be healthier in the workplace and your family will be healthier at home.

Common Myths about Feminine Hygiene Disposal

Feminine Hygiene Vending
Myths and outdated practices regarding feminine hygiene continue to influence many women today. While some are disregarded as unlikely there are a few myths that still remain persuasive. The disposal of feminine hygiene waste at first glance might seem to be an unimportant issue since waste management is not often on the forefront of many people’s minds. Nonetheless, feminine hygiene disposal is quite important and if not handled correctly could cause harm to others.

There's long been desire for something other than simply flushing feminine hygiene products down the toilet or placing it in a waste bin. A clean safe system where such waste can be disposed of easily and where people know that health, social and environmental concerns have been dealt with. The following are some myths about feminine hygiene disposal that many women have become accustomed to.
  • It’s fine to place feminine hygiene products in any waste bin if you wrap it. This statement is simply not true. There are special units for feminine product disposal that are separate from the regular trash because of the possibly hazardous nature of feminine hygiene products. If you are using a women's restroom, be sure to use the right receptacle for sanitary disposal. For the safest disposal, touch-free feminine hygiene disposal service is the best.
  •
  • You can flush feminine hygiene products down the toilet if the label says so. While there are new products on the market today with applicators that are made of materials designed to break down in heavy water. This doesn’t mean that septic systems are meant to handle the excess as most are partially biodegradable at best.  In addition to causing costly damages to your plumbing system, flushing tampons or sanitary napkins can pollute streams and rivers, cause hormonal changes in wildlife and enable harmful organisms to enter the food chain.

  • When disposing, you don’t have to worry about bacteria since the feminine hygiene products are labeled “sanitary”. Although they are sanitary when first used, feminine hygiene products become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria or germs when it comes time to dispose of them because of the length of time they are used.  Over the years, various treatments have been applied to combat the growth of harmful bacteria, reduce odors while in use, and keep sanitary napkins more hygienic, but they compromised comfort and caused irritation in many cases. This is why sanitary disposal must be taken seriously and handled properly.
It’s important to understand the myths about feminine hygiene disposal so you can ensure the right rules are being following when disposing of your hygienic materials. Making a mistake could cost you money, cause you or someone else to become ill and lead to a very embarrassing situation.

Surprising Places to Find Germs in the Workplace

Nobody ever thinks of their workplace as a breeding ground for germs, but the office can actually be playground for virus and bacteria organisms. Working in close courters contributes to the spread of these unwanted visitors, especially if your coworkers are careless about washing their hands or stubborn about coming into work when their sick. That’s why understanding your surroundings and knowing where the germs thrive is extremely important to your health and productivity. The following are some surprising places to find germs in the workplace:
  • Telephones: Surprisingly, or not, telephones are the workplace’s top location for germs. Telephones have been known to host germs that cause pneumonia, staph, colds, flus and many other harmful bacteria and viruses. That’s one piece of office equipment that you should think twice about before sharing.
  • Desks: Studies have shown that you will find more bacteria, nearly 400 times more, on an average desk than an average toilet seat. This is because cleaning crews spend countless hours scrubbing down the toilet, but they rarely ever clean off the desks for fear of disturbing the employees work.
  • Computer keyboards: Most office cleaning companies don’t wipe down the computer keyboard because they don’t want to risk damaging it. This makes cleaning it the employee’s problem and most don’t bother.
  • Elevator buttons: If you work in a building with many floors, then an elevator is probably used quite frequently by employees, clients and guests. That’s hundreds of germy hands pushing the buttons a day.
Ways to prevent compilation of germs
In order to prevent your workplace from becoming a "bacteria cafeteria", it’s important for you and your coworkers to employ hygienic practices. Although you may think swapping your desk, phone and computer with antibacterial wipes or sprays will do the trick, it’s actually just spreading the germs around instead of killing them. Antibacterial products only kill a portion of the spectrum of bacteria that’s out there, so make sure you use something that says "disinfecting" or "sanitizing" in order to properly attack most bacteria and viruses. It’s also important to wash your hands instead of simply dousing them with sanitizer.

At WellBeing, we offer services that guarantee a clean, safe and healthy environment for your customers and employees. We offer state-of-the-art, hands free technology that will help your organization decrease the risk of cross contamination and exposure to harmful bacteria. We help organizations of all sizes in various industries safeguard their facilities against a variety of bacteria including: E-Coli, Hepatitis, HIV, MRSA, Staph, and Strep.

Knowing that germs foster in the workplace environment shouldn’t cause you to become paranoid- there are always going to be germs in your office. Being aware of where they are and learning healthy ways to avoid them is a better way to look at things.

WellBeing Partners with Dyson Airblade

We are proud to announce a new hand dryer partnership with Dyson’s Airblade.  Working in just 12 seconds, it's the fastest hand dryer – and it's hygienic, too, forcing air through a HEPA filter before blowing it onto hands. And because it uses up to 80% less energy than warm air hand dryers, it costs less to run. It can also help lower a business's carbon footprint - with no paper towels creating waste.

Dyson has a worldwide reputation for establishing innovative equipment for use at home or in industry and commerce; most people would be familiar with television advertising of the Dyson vacuum cleaner.  In recent times, Dyson has been working with product engineers to create brand new concepts and designs for long established household products,  in addition to the release of their modern electric fan.

WellBeing has signed an agreement to become the only official distributor that provides a full-service lease option.  Current WellBeing clients are now offered a better alternative to cut paper costs as well as do away with warm hand dryers that are too slow and unhygienic.  Warm air hand dryers are too slow. Some can take as long as 43 seconds to work. It's because of their motors. They can't create enough airflow to remove water from hands effectively. They're also unhygienic, sucking in dirty washroom air and blowing it back onto hands. And they still heat the air – which is expensive and not very green.

Dyson has conducted many case studies which demonstrate both the health and cost benefits of the Airblade.  WellBeing Hygiene's program will also benefit your budget during tough financial times!  Through our full-service leasing program, your facility will no longer have to budget the outright purchase of a Dyson Airblade as a capital expense, therefore allowing you to realize a substantial Return on Investment starting on Day 1.  Contact us to receive a complimentary savings analysis.

Toilet Seat Sanitation in Schools

Children aren’t always the cleanest bunch, especially while using the restroom. Whether it's inattentiveness or just plain laziness, the toilet seats tend to get the worst of it. Although it may prove difficult to keep school toilets clean all the time, it is necessary. Because of these frequent “accidents”, toilet seat sanitation is even more important and it’s the schools responsibility to maintain a healthy restroom environment.

Keeping the students healthy
Good infection control starts with good hygiene. Organisms, especially viruses, can live on surfaces for hours and even days, so proper sanitation is vital for keeping students healthy. A school can reap many benefits from keeping their toilet seats clean, which include:
  • Fewer children missing school days because of sicknesses acquired by germs in restrooms and on toilet seats.
  • Fewer illness for children especially diarrhea, vomiting and respiratory illness.
  • Fewer outbreaks of infectious disease.
Proper cleaning techniques
Cleanliness and maintenance of toilets should be checked daily to ensure its upkeep is being sustained. Schools may even want to include the students in the checking process so they can start to get an idea of what to look for themselves - make it a learning experience as well.
  • Using cleaning products specifically designed for a particular job is extremely beneficial. For example: toilet bowl cleaner for the toilet bowl, toilet seat cleaner for the toilet seat, etc. Using a toxic cleaning product on the actual toilet seat could cause irritation and/or burns- not good!
  • Make sure the toilets seats are cleaned regularly. Children constantly use the bathroom throughout the day and can get dirty fairly quickly. Once a week may not be good enough.
  • If there is an emergency, the toilet should be cleaned immediately to prevent further spread of germs and potential infections. Don’t wait another day, or even another hour to clean it up.
A simple solution
Even when you have a proper cleaning regimen in place, deposits from previous users can still appear on the toilet seats causing a potential health hazard. Because of this, schools should put toilet seat covers in every bathroom so students can use them if necessary. Toilet seat covers are made paper thin so they can be easily flushed, yet durable so they can effectively protect the user from the germs on the toilet seat. With toilet seat covers, you don’t have to think about the person that sat before you. It’s easy, safe, and will benefit not only the students, but also the school as a whole. These covers, by no means, undermine the necessity of regular cleaning, and schools should still maintain their typical cleaning schedule. These covers will simply be an additional measure to fighting germs and to keeping students safe.

Restroom Sanitation and the Environment

Restrooms are, in fact, one of those rooms that require a lot of attention, especially when it comes to cleaning. And with that, comes the responsibility to make it easier, safer, faster and better for individuals and the environment. Coincidentally, with the advances in restroom technology, it is getting easier to make restroom sanitation and the environment work harmoniously together to create a healthy atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. The following are some helpful hints to keeping your restroom sanitation environmentally friendly.

Use less water
One of the most useful ways to make the restroom cleaning process more eco-friendly, is by utilizing products that reduce water consumption. Studies have shown that 70 percent of overall water usage is from bathrooms, which makes water saving products an essential commodity.

Automatic flushers
Low flush, automatic toilet flushers are not only helpful for forgetful children, but they are also great for the environment. By using these flushers, you can reduce the amount of water used every time you flush (typically 9 liters) to 6 liters of water or less.

Automatic faucets
It’s common for people, especially children, to leave faucets running longer than necessary when washing hands. A hands-free faucet can reduce over half of the water used daily by simply running only when necessary- not the whole time.

Use fewer resources
Taking advantage of touch free restroom technologies is a great way to limit the use of resources.  Below are a couple of examples.

Hands-free dryers

Environmental disruption and waste can be significantly reduced by switching to energy-efficient, fast-working hand dryers. Even recycled paper isn’t a contender for the efficient hand dryer- it takes 7,000 gallons of water, 360 gallons of oil, 158 million BTUs of energy, and 86 pounds of pollutants go into the atmosphere when making recycled paper.

Mounted soap dispenser
In addition to preventing the spread of germs, hands-free soap dispensers reduce waste by automatically releasing an ideal amount of soap when motion is detected, instead of allowing children to pump unnecessary amounts of soap that will simply get washed down the drain without much purpose.

Green materials and ecological design are the cutting-edge ways to implement sound health and hygiene practices, ensuring that clean water, clean air, and healthy habitats remain available for everyone over time. Since restrooms require a great deal of energy and host a number of germs, it’s even more necessary for individuals to use eco-friendly products for illness prevention, as well as for environmental conservation.

How to Lower Costs with Touch Free Restroom Technologies

With today’s unpredictable economy, it’s no surprise why people are searching for ways to lower their costs wherever they can. Because facilities are constantly working within budget constraints, hands-free technology should be considered as a viable solution to reducing waste and cutting costs. Despite the popular belief that new technology means more money, using touch-free technology can actually lower costs in the long run compared to traditional applications and fixtures.

Touch-free Technologies
Although there is an initial cost associated with purchasing touch-free technologies, the ROI makes it a smart investment in the long run. In addition, touch-free technologies have less maintenance costs that are often apparent with traditional manual applications such as:

  • Replacing materials that are running out or ruined (accidentally, because of vandalism, or because of aging).
  • Money loss caused by overuse and inefficiency: It’s inevitable that products will become old and run down. This will cause them to become inefficient, waste energy, and lose money.
  • Plumbers and other professionals needed for upkeep: Because hands-free appliances work mostly off a motion sensor, they require less maintenance due to reduced unnecessary usage.

Cost-effective touch-free items

Automatic Flushers
Traditional manual flushers run the risk of getting beat up and becoming inefficient, therefore requiring immediate replacement. Technicians can easily install new hands-free, sensor-operated flushers to existing fixtures. These units are battery-operated and require battery changes only once a year.

Automatic Faucets
With touch-free faucets, the water runs only when needed which results in water savings of up to 70 percent. This not only conserves precious resources, but it also reduces costs.

Mounted Soap Dispensers
A lot of people, especially children, use way too much soap/ sanitizer when washing their hands. In order to combat this, touch-free soap/sanitizer dispensers release the ideal amount of soup necessary for proper hand sanitation and cleansing creating less waste and ultimately less costs.

Hand dryers
With hand dryers, there is no need to buy towels to refill dispensers, and the unit is always ready to perform — there’s no chance of paper towel run-outs. In addition, paper towels are a lifetime cost.  Plus, facilities spend more money on waste pickup due to the buildup of paper towel trash.

Health concerns are no longer the only thing driving the demand for touch-free technology.  Although "germ prevention" is a major benefit, more and more people are beginning to see the cost benefits related to touch-free appliances as well. With the consistent growth in this area of technology, we can only expect to see more improvements and even better cost savings in the future.

Why Schools Need Hands Free Technology in Restrooms

Young children are more prone to getting sick from germs than most adults, because of their developing immune systems. Because the schools most children go to are densely populated, sharing supplies is common. It’s no secret that most children don’t have the best hygiene habits, and with so many of them touching EVERYTHING, the odds are your child will be bringing home more than just homework this school year. This is why schools need hands-free technology to help keep the students safe. Hands-free technology is perhaps the most revolutionary innovation for schools and they should take advantage of the evolving trend.

Physical contact is the most common way for germs to be spread; therefore, schools and students would benefit greatly from using hands-free technology. The following are some helpful hands-free items that schools should utilize to help stop the spread of germs:

Automated Faucets
When it comes to germ catchers, faucets are top of the list, especially ones in the bathroom. They provide the perfect environment where germs can flourish. By using a hands-free faucet, you can eliminate the potential for kids to catch germs because no “touching” is involved. Wave your hand under the faucet and water will immediately come out. Once you are finished the water will stop as soon as you pull your hand away from the sink.

Soap dispensers
A regular bar of soap can be infested with germs, especially if it is touched by a number of students. With a hands-free soap dispenser, you simply wave your hand in front of the sensor and it will dispense a drop of soap in your palm. The same device can be used for hand sanitizers and can be placed easily in hallways, classrooms, restrooms, etc.

Hand dryers
Even though you touch a hand dryer after you have already washed your hands, viruses and bacteria still find their way onto the unsuspecting product through the air and other means. With a hands-free hand dryer, you just put your hand under it and VOILA! Your hands are dry without the risk of being infected with germs.

Air fresheners
The bathroom can host a range of bad smells due to germs and other air pollutants. With hands-free air fresheners and neutralizers, you can give that bathroom a clean air smell without having to risk touching germ infested air freshener cans or other freshening products.

Automatic flushers
Toilets host a wide array of germs that can cause cross-contamination from handle touching and odors from unflushed equipment. Hands-free/automatic flushers will help ensure the consistent cleanliness of the restroom by automatically flushing after use, which leaves no need for the student to touch the contaminated toilet.

As parents, teachers and individuals determined to create a healthier environment for children, it is our responsibility to provide the best for them. Since most of their time is spent at school, hands-free technology would be a great investment not only for children’s health, but for the overall health of the school itself.

The End of Flu Season Doesn't Mean the End of Germs

Most people rack up on sanitizers and other germ fighting products during the flu season to combat the ever-apparent concentration of germs; however, once the flu season dies down they go right back to their old habits of carelessness and lack of proper hygiene. But here’s the truth;  the end of flu season doesn’t mean the end of germs! Germs are everywhere, and while some can be helpful, others can be extremely harmful, especially to children or those with weaker immune systems. Since most people don’t consider the crowds of individuals that touch public items in just one day, they put themselves at a higher risk of getting sick.

The following are 5 common places that you should avoid touching with your bare hands – all year long, not just during the flu season.

Office/Public Restrooms:  This is an obvious location in which germs live.  Ask your employer or the facility manager to start using touch free restroom technologies such as automatic faucets.  Avoiding contact with restroom fixtures is a great way to not come into contact with germs.

ATM machines:  If you thought payphones were germ magnets, ATM machines are worse. ATM’s are like a vacation for germs- they skip around happily enjoying their flourishing environment.  If you happen to carry antibacterial wipes, which is highly recommended, take a quick swipe at the buttons; if not, you should complete your transaction with your knuckles or wear gloves.

Escalator handrails:  It’s amazing how many people take escalators in various locations and don’t think about the number of people who’ve put their hands on the railing before them. Although it’s a habit to put your hands on the railings, don’t do so unless you safety is compromised. If you have to use it for balance, then use an elbow or forearm instead.

Shopping carts and baskets:  Hundreds of people use shopping carts and baskets daily, so it’s no surprise that germs use it as a breeding ground. Try to keep sanitation wipes with you or attempt to push the cart with either your elbows or the palms of hands. When carrying a basket, try to hold it on your arm, or use a tissue to grab the handles.

Door handles:  This one might seem like a no brainer, as most people know to avoid touching public restroom door handles and faucets. But, what they forget is that even private homes’ doors can host a number of germs. Whether you are in a private residence or in public, it’s important to wipe down the knobs or use a spare napkin or tissue to open the door handles.

You can’t expect to completely rid your surrounding of germs - they keep your immune system working and multiply so much it would be impossible anyways. However, you can help prevent yourself from getting a cold, the flu, or any other infection by always being aware of your surroundings and keeping your hands clean.

You should always have a set of antibacterial wipes or gloves with you to use as a barrier between your hands and germs. If you don’t have wipes or gloves, use tissues, baby wipes, napkins, or anything else on hand to clean with. Again, you should practice these techniques year long and not just during cold and flu season- unlike bears, germs don’t hibernate.

What Schools Should do to Fight Germs

Although schools are necessary for furthering kids’ knowledge and skill sets, it is also a hotbed for germs and other illness causing contaminants. Regardless of how clean a particular student is, there is no way that he/she could completely avoid the ever-apparent compilation of germs. In order to keep the students safe from colds, flus and other viruses, schools should constantly look at ways that they can help prevent the spread of these illnesses and maintain a healthy environment for everyone.

Use Hands-free technology
Because of the way children play, they are particularly susceptible to germs via contact. Since contact spread is responsible for 80% of all infectious diseases, it’s imperative that schools limit the amount of objects that require touch operation, especially for those germy fixtures in the bathroom. In this case, hands-free technology is the perfect solution. It allows teachers and students to operate germ infested fixtures such as: Promote proper hygiene
Encouraging students to employ proper hygienic procedures in a fun and entertaining way can be extremely useful. Instead of boring them with a lecture or scaring them with facts, teachers and other school professionals should engage students in an open environment so they can learn via positive reinforcement. Include issues such as:
  • Proper hand washing
  • Cough etiquette
  • Sharing personal items
  • Healthy foods
  • What germs actually are, etc.
Provide healthier meal options
It is very important for schools to develop healthier meal plan option for students, because 70% of our immune function is in our gut. Schools should avoid sugar and processed foods as much as possible and offer students a diet rich in:
  • Fresh vegetables - especially dark leafy greens
  • Fruits
  • Unprocessed whole grains, nuts and legumes
  • Grass-fed meat
  • And occasionally dairy

Germs are Everywhere - Protect Yourself

Germs, the all-embracing term for bacteria and viruses, are everywhere and now is the time to start protecting yourself from these unwanted visitors. Whether you are at home, work, or even enjoying a day at the park, it’s guaranteed that you will come into contact with these harmful intruders. Germs are everywhere - in food, in the air, on plants and animals, in the soil, in the water, on just about every other surface, and even on your own body. Don’t be alarmed though, most germs won't hurt you as our immune systems are made to protect us from these persistent agents; however, some germs are challenging rivals because they're constantly mutating to break your immune system's defenses.

Protect Yourself!

By learning to protect yourself from germs, you are not only keeping yourself healthy when something is "going around", but you are also preventing future colds, flus and other sicknesses by improving your daily germ fighting habits. The following are some common ways to prevent germs from attacking your body and making you sick.

Wash your hands: One of the number one ways to protect yourself from germs is by simply washing your hands regularly. Antibacterial soaps are great, but plain soap and water work just as well, if not better- just lather up and rinse and your good to go!

Wipe down all surfaces: No matter whether the surface is wood, plastic, stainless steel, or even the paper in a magazine, germs breed there. Make sure you wipe down all surfaces, especially in your kitchen. The kitchen is especially important because of the bacteria present on some uncooked foods, especially meats.

Get a proper sanitizer: In everyday life, you may encounter situations where you need to sanitize your hands, but there is no proper hand washing equipment available- this is where hand sanitizers come in handy. Your hand sanitizer should be at least 60% alcohol if you hope to disinfect in between washing and any time you come into contact with anything someone else might have touched. If not, they may not work properly and you could put yourself at even higher risk of getting sick.

Avoid sharing personal items:   Sharing is caring- but not in this case. Sharing items such as makeup or earrings can give germs easy access to your welcoming body and may cause you to get infections or disease.

Evaluate your lifestyle
Exercising, eating nutritious foods, staying hydrated and getting enough sleep can help reduce stress and improve your immune system’s ability to ward off germ invasions.

Drinking fountains:
Since water fountains are damp and rarely cleaned properly (if at all), they are a popular breeding ground for germs. A helpful hint would be to run the water for at least 10 seconds before drinking it- this can help you avoid these germs and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some other top places where germs thrive are: public magazines, grocery carts, keyboards and office equipment, gym equipment and even the remote control.

Take advantage of technology
Automated hygiene technologies such as automatic faucets, automatic flushers and automatic cleaners are just a few examples of how technology can help prevent the spread of germs.

Although we can’t completely avoid germs, we can make it difficult for them to affect us. The importance of washing your hands can’t be expressed enough, and by following the other proper cleaning techniques you can better equip yourself to handle the onset of a sickness and maintain a sick-free lifestyle for yourself and your family.

Is Hand Sanitizer Better Than Hand Washing?

Some people believe that using hand sanitizer is better than washing your hands the “old fashioned” way (with soap and water).  This statement all depends on what you believe is “better”.  Alcohol-based hand sanitizer does kill more bacteria in a shorter period of time than many hand soaps.  Although hand sanitizer is better than nothing at all, it does not kill all bacteria that may be present on your hand.

The problem with antibacterial soap

There are a number of chemicals that make up antibacterial soap.  One of these chemicals, triclosan, needs an extended period of time to become effective.  This additional time is usually not taken into account when people are washing their hands.  The normal hand washing lasts 20-30 seconds.  A liquid hand sanitizer however will stay in contact with the skin long enough to allow the alcohol to kill off the unwanted bacteria.

Regular hand soap works by producing a fatty ingredient that bonds to the contaminants and skin oils, while a detergent breaks the surface of the skin which allows water to wash away any floating particles.  This does however wash away some of the beneficial bacteria that can be found on your hands.  A liquid hand sanitizer works much the same way, but it does not wash away the skin’s natural oily layer.

We recommend taking advantage of our hands-free soap dispensers.  This will allow you to wash your hands without having to touch any of the products that could contain germs from other individuals.  This coupled with automatic faucets are a great way in helping to fight germs in your office or school building.

How to NOT Get Sick at Work this Winter

The winter time is the most common time to get sick.  The cold and flu season reminds us all how important it is to practice good hygiene especially at work.  Your work place is usually the first culprit when it comes to the source of a cold or the flu.  The reason behind this typically deals primarily with coworkers who don’t wash their hands after they use the restroom.  We have provided, in a previous blog, when and how you should wash your hands.  Below are tips on when you should wash your hands while at work.

While at work, be sure to wash your hands frequently to avoid getting sick.  The times you should wash your hands at work include:
  • After you use the restroom
  • Before and after you eat lunch
  • Anytime you use a colleagues keyword, stapler or anything else they use often
  • After reading newspapers or magazines in your break room
  • Anytime after you use shared office equipment such as phones, copiers, and fax machines
If you work in an office, follow the steps listed above to help you avoid getting (or spreading) germs. If your office restroom isn’t taking advantage of automated hygiene technologies, then ask about having them installed in your office restrooms.  They will go a long way in helping you avoid getting sick this winter.

What is the Sneeze Effect?

The "sneeze effect" in toilets is something that often goes overlooked.  When you flush your toilet, your toilet spews plumes of bacteria, moisture and viruses in the air.  These particles can land on your bathroom surfaces (or you) up to eight feet.  Simply putting your toilet seat and cover down will not prevent the spread of these bathroom germs.  Make sure you keep your toothbrush and other items that need to be kept sanitary away from your toilet for optimal sanitation.

Below are things you can do to help maintain a clean environment around your toilet.
  • Put the toilet seat and cover down prior to flushing to buy some extra time to leave the area around your toilet.
  • Clean your toilet regularly and after it has been vomited in or after a user had diarrhea.
  • Clean thoroughly.  Be sure to clean under the rim of your toilet bowl in those “hard to reach” areas including the bottom side of your toilet seat.
  • Clean the ceilings and walls around the toilet.  Those areas can be impacted too.

Washing Your Hands - Let's Keep it Simple

Washing your hands is something we should all do not only after using the restroom, but throughout the day.  It’s the best way to help prevent the spread of germs.  Clean hands will help you avoid getting sick and will help prevent you from spreading germs to others.  Soap and clean, running water will help prevent the spread of diseases and other conditions.  Below are steps to washing your hands properly.

When to wash your hands

Below are the times you should wash your hands according to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC).  Washing your hands during these times is the best way to avoid getting sick.
  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal or animal waste
  • After touching garbage
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound

How to wash your hands

Believe it or not, some people set out to wash their hands, but don’t do it properly.  We provide 5 simple steps that will help you ensure you are washing your hands properly.
  • Use running, clean water to wet your hands and start applying soap.
  • Rub your hands together to create a lather.  Scrub them well, making sure to wash the back of your hands, between your fingers and underneath your fingernails.
  • Rub your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.
  • Rinse your hands well with clean, running water.
  • Dry each of your hands with a clean towel or simply air dry.

Hand Sanitizer

If you do not have access to running water and soap, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol is acceptable.  However, do not rely on hand sanitizer to clean visibly dirty hands.  To use hand sanitizer simply apply a small amount into the palm of your hand.  Rub your hands together thoroughly until each of your hands are dry.

Restroom Sanitation

Restroom sanitation is not something most business owners spend much time considering.  On the list of corporate objectives, the condition of the office bathroom is usually pretty low.  But wise employers understand that it is often the little things that help set great work environments apart.  And as the workforce only becomes more transient, the best companies understand that it is often the smallest amenities that make an employee feel truly valued.
